Here is how to figure out what is driving the behavior and how to fix it.
Dogs have two small fluid sacs located inside their anus (at roughly the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions). These glands produce a strong-smelling fluid every time your dog has a firm bowel movement.
What Happens: If your dog's stool is consistently soft or they have narrow anal ducts, these glands fail to empty naturally. They become full, swollen, itchy, or impacted.
Key Signs: Scooting on carpet, sudden fishy or metallic odor, chewing at the base of the tail, or sitting down abruptly mid-walk.
The Fix: Have a vet or professional groomer manually express the glands. Increasing daily dietary fiber (like canned pumpkin or psyllium husk) helps create bulkier stools that express the glands naturally.
Just like humans get itchy eyes or a runny nose, dogs manifest allergies through their skin—especially around their paws, ears, and rear end.
What Happens: Food allergies (often to proteins like chicken or beef) or environmental allergens (pollen, dust mites, grass) cause systemic skin inflammation. The thin, sensitive skin around the anus becomes red, dry, and intensely itchy.
Key Signs: Licking paws, chronic ear infections, red belly skin, and scooting without any fishy odor from anal glands.
The Fix: Work with your vet on an elimination diet or switch to a novel/hydrolyzed protein diet. Incorporating Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) and gut-supportive probiotics helps calm allergic skin flare-ups from the inside out.
While less common in well-cared-for indoor dogs, parasites are still a real possibility—especially if your dog visits dog parks or eats things off the ground.
What Happens: Tapeworms, whipworms, and roundworms irritate the lower intestinal tract and anus as segments or eggs exit the body.
Key Signs: White, rice-like specks around the anus or in the stool (classic tapeworm segments), unexplained weight loss, dull coat, or an enlarged "potbelly" in younger dogs.
The Fix: Bring a fresh stool sample to your vet for a fecal test, or administer a broad-spectrum, vet-approved dewormer.
| Primary Symptom | Most Likely Cause | Best Immediate Action |
| Strong "fishy" smell + scooting | Anal Gland Fullness | Express glands & add dietary fiber |
| Itchy paws/ears + red anus | Allergies | Switch protein source & add Omega-3s |
| White "rice-like" specks in stool | Tapeworms | Administer targeted dewormer |
